Webmaster’s Musings

I’ve probably said this before, but blogging is a strange business. Running any web site is, really. When I was in the pizza delivery business, sales traffic was pretty straightforward. We’d open at 3pm, and it’d be slow until the supper rush started about 5, and then it’d be slow and steady through prime-time, then die until a flurry when the bars all closed. On weekends, there’d be more sales throughout the evening and from the hotels. On Sunday evenings when the college cafeterias were closed, the store on the campus side of town would get hammered. If we put out coupons for something in particular, we’d sell more of that. And so on. It was all pretty predictable. Read more »

Cool Stuff: Sand Art

This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while.  A Ukrainian woman tells the story of the German invasion during World War II, when 1/4 of the people of Ukraine were killed. And she does it by drawing in sand with her fingers.  I’m linking to it rather than embedding it, so you can read the story that goes with it; but seriously, go watch it.

How to Treat Your Introvert

I ran across this link called How to Care for Introverts today and realized I’ve never written about being an introvert, although I’ve mentioned it in passing a couple times.  That link goes to a very crummy scanned image, so I thought I’d type it in here, and then add my own thoughts.

The Quincy folks were charming hosts, and threw a dinner party for us last night where all the food was homemade, and delicious.

Egg Production Skyrocketing!

Last week we got seven eggs in one day for the first time!  So now we know for sure that they’re all laying.  (For those who don’t know, chickens lay one egg a day at most, and usually skip every third or fourth day.)  One of the last ones to lay was the Ameraucana, and they sometimes lay a pinkish-brown egg, so we couldn’t be sure she wasn’t laying some of the brown ones until we finally got a green one.

Long-Overdue Garden Update

I’ve been meaning to do a garden update for a long time, but I never seemed to have pictures of everything handy when I could sit down and do it.  So let’s see if I can remember everything that’s changed since the last time.  Comments after the pictures.

Latin Lesson #29: The Passive Voice of the Perfect System

I’ve finally finished another Latin Lesson, this one #29, covering the passive voice of the perfect system and the ablative of personal agent.  I’ll explain the hiatus in another post.  The next one will be on infinitives, which are actually kind of fun—or easier than the passive, anyway.
